The article I read stated '"The perpetrators regularly gain access to an unprivileged local user account, presumably by sniffing passwords, cracking passwords from other compromised systems, or by triggering vulnerabilities in remotely accessible services," the Stanford advisory states.'

Did you just skip the "triggering vulnerabilities in remotely accessible services" comment? Don't know what percentage of these attacks were of this type, but apparently there were at least some.

Once again, ANY OS can be broken into if not properly setup and maintained.
