The real problem with "hardening"
is that for most smaller companies it's a chimera - no more practical as a security solution than a walk on the moon to clear your sinuses.

At least one (if not several) critical pieces of software requires elevated privileges to operate correctly that cannot be resolved with runas workarounds.

At least one - if not several - pieces of unique software make use of IE as a significant component of their functionality such that restricting IE to settings that make good sense from a safe browser point of view breaks a bewildering amount of what should be completely unrelated software - but isn't.

Users need a wide range of connectivity inside the network, so firewalling each individual machine from the rest of the network as is alluded to won't prevent a worm from spreading if one ever get's inside the border firewall.

Most users aren't knowledgeable enough about the software and IP connectivity of their machines such that you can pretty much count on them denying the good things while letting the bad ones go by.

I'm glad what you are doing has worked for you, just as I'm happy to say that my company has only just once - a single machine infected with LoveBug for a 5 minute period - experienced a known infection incident.

Of course, the known ones don't keep me up at night any more - it's the unkown ones that worry me.

And I'm pleased that at least 3 more of them are (we hope) put to rest.

Just my 2 creds.
