Have you looked
at the patches and what they affect? SuSE will
only list patches that apply to your system. So
the number may be more or less for the same
distrobution, it all depends on your set-up.

Difference #1 - Diversity in construction is
line one of security.

If I remember correctly only 2 patches of the
ones I have installed, were kernel level and if
memory serves me correctly, only 1 was remote
exploitable. Of the others, they were
application patches and all but 3 were local
only exploits, meaining the person had to be at
my Laptop or PC physically.

Difference #2

Another thing is that 30% of the patches were
actually upgrade / improvements for various
apps within my system. I did not have to install
them if I decided not too.

Difference #3

With Linux I can start the patching process on
one desktop then move to another and go about my
business until all patches are downloaded and
installed. Then I am asked to complete the
process and all the pertinant configuration
scripts are updated for me and I then can close
the patching tool. With Microsoft, I have to
install the patches in a particular order, that
without first doing some research first is not
readily available. Then I have to reboot for
just about every single one of the damn things.
With Microsoft, unless there is something I am
missing, I cannot tell the download tool to
intall all patches required.

Difference #4

The Linux patching system is much more efficient
and easy to use compared to the Microsoft
system.
