other differences you missed...
* how many of those patches could have lead to remote exploits? how many of them were critical security fixes?

* also, how many of them were actually "linux patches?" sorry, but if you distro decides to make patches available for apache or open ssl, that's not a linux patch...

* try installing WinXP, Office, IIS, and a host of other unilities. Then see how many patches and service packs you need to apply?
