If you look at all the successful exploits, none of them required ActiveX. There may be 100,000 unsuccessful exploits that do use ActiveX but it hardly helps your point.

This just got patched, it's been out in the wild for a while and real users are getting hit. In many ways, this one's even worse than an email bug, in my opinion. It's incredibly easy to set up a Geocities account with bogus credentials, build your Web page and target your victim.
