More misinformation.
Unless the attachment is a .rpm.
Wrong. Completely wrong.

Or the executable was tarred with the execute bit enabled. When untarred, gosh, the execute bit is on!!
But nothing happens. Does Thunderbird handle tar archives or RPM packages? Nope. Nice try, but nothing get executed. Thunderbird has no means to act on these strange non-MIME attachments. It nicely asks me if I'd like to download 'em or open them in an appropriate file handler. If I agree to it, the handler then sternly informs me that I need to supply upgraded credentials in order to proceed. And, in the case of downloading attachments, Thunderbird's default behavior is to change permissions on all downloaded files to 644. No mischief is gonna happen here, unless I explicitly jump through some hoops to make it happen.

Fess up. You really have no experience at all with Linux, do you? Seriously, you need to get a graphic artist to set up your system next time, because if you're getting Thunderbird by itself to launch executables (like IE can be coaxed to do with ActiveX and cross-site scripting exploits) on Linux without throwing up at least two barriers, then you've seriously screwed the pooch on your install.
