"How does a browser not being integrated into the OS make it more or less secure?"

Imagine I am a policeman. I am not happy with your behavior, so I am going to fire one of those bean bags at you to cool you off. Now this is going to hurt, but you will live, all be it in temporary distress.

Now imagine instead that under the same scenario I have surgically imbedded the barrel of the bean bag gun into your chest right next to your heart. When I fire the same gun this time, you might not live through it.

It is the same with this integrated code. It is not that a modular browser is impossible to infect, but the infection takes a while to worm its way to something vital. Integrated code like IE, WMP, MSN IM, etc. places the barrel of this gun right next to the vital organs of my system. The infections are much harder to control.

I won't charge for this lesson.
