It is about software perception.
VBScript or ActiveX are inherently flawed by design. But because
they're welded to the OS (like many MS products). There are
more security holes. let's face it, MS's security record is not the
best. But this is by design, they but "Features" before "Security".
As it now stands, they have announced that there will be no new
browsers till longhorn. There are many unpatched holes in IE,
some as old as 3 years (if I'm not mistaken). So why would
anyone want to use it? This is where MS was smart.

First: they weld the web browser into the OS, guaranteed that it's
the most available browser. This is a marketing move, not a
technical one. 90% of the end users won't download what they
already have on their machines.

Second: they did what they could to hamper other companies
products. Even though the other product is actually better, it's
hamstrung on windows. This give the false impression that the
MS product is better. After they use special "hidden" APIs, that
no one else can use.

In short it's the perception that something is better. It's not
about reality, but a perceived image. That's has been Microsoft's
only strong point.
