I also have a hard time understanding why Apple would lie about this.

I would hesitate to picture Apple as one entity. If the CIA assasinated Kim Jong Il and the Press Secretary held a news conference later that day stating The USA did not assasinate Kim Jong Il, is he lying if he hadn't been told of the operation? He is wrong but he isn't lying. Maybe something like that is going on here?

To be honest though, I don't even really care that much about whether Apple is lying, M&E is lying, or both are telling the truth (which is possible if you don't view Apple as being 1 person). What I do honestly find interesting in all of this is the reaction of the Mac faithful. You all profess to know that the Mac isn't invulnerable yet the venom directed at George for this story gives you away (you being the group, not just you personally, please keep that in mind for the rest of this post). If you truly believed that the Mac was theoretically vulnerable, the reaction should have been more:
Hmm, that's interesting. I guess it could happen since, after all, the Mac isn't invulnerable. Let's see if anyone actually gets hit with this!

That most certainly wasn't the reaction though. The anger doesn't seem to be about someone saying the Mac was hit. The anger seems to be at even suggesting the Mac could be hit. You talk about a smear campaign but only someone who thought the Mac was invulnerable could possibly think the suggestion of a wireless vulnerability was a smear. If you believe Macs could have a vulnerability, M&E saying they found one isn't a smear, it is simply an unproven example of something that was true. Note that it isn't the disbelief of M&E's specific claim that gives you away, it is the venom and the accusation of a smear campaign that does it. M&E (and George by reporting it) struck at a deep belief in you that the Mac is invulnerable.

Well, that is my opinion anyway. Like I said, I found the reaction to this event far, far, far more interesting than the event itself which, quite frankly, wasn't that big of a deal to begin with, especially given that you believe Macs could, theoretically, have vulnerabilities.
