No good reason
Given how painfully controlling Apple is of everything they do, if they were out to commit fraud, one would think they'd have a good reason to do so. I have yet to hear an even slightly plausible one.

---You all profess to know that the Mac isn't invulnerable yet the venom directed at George for this story gives you away (you being the group, not just you personally, please keep that in mind for the rest of this post).--

Okay, I hear you, but I think you're reading the reaction wrong. We aren't furious at George for mentioning one way a Mac could be vulnerable. We're angry at him for his continuous attacks on any platform other than Windows. We're angry at his manipulation and twisting of data. More relevant here, we're upset because he offered us valuable information--a claim that our computers were at great risk, then he refused to back it up or give us any more info. Is my computer vulnerable? Should I do something else to protect it? I don't know, George won't tell me.

Add that in with the whole exploit being a directed attack against "smug" Mac users. Now you have George celebrating black hat hacks. Why shouldn't we be upset with him?

---You talk about a smear campaign---

I use that phrase as a parody of George's "orchestrated campaign".

---only someone who thought the Mac was invulnerable could possibly think the suggestion of a wireless vulnerability was a smear---

Wouldn't making up a vulnerability and repeating it over and over again in the press qualify as a smear?
