You didn't miss anything....
... it was just another example of bad reporting, based off of another article that is over a year old.

Vista's default setting is SLEEP, which means the Seagate drive would still be vulnerable -- but you can easily change Vista's default setting to Shutdown, hibernate, etc., to offset this risk.

But as we all know, getting users to change a default setting is unlikely. Heck, most people can't be bothered to keep their antivirus software updated, why should they care about drive encryption?
