...and the drive doesn't force you to encrypt what's written to it, then maybe you don't have to worry about the 2nd-drive-has-half-a-million-spyware-and-19,000-virus-infection blues. besides, if people are convinced that the technology will lock them out of the computer, they'll just buy something else (western digital, samsung, or fujitsu drives lacking the technology). and unlike the dvr drives, there is nothing about drm for these drives at this time - that's handled by either os or software, and even if the drive starts doing drm, it'll be cracked...just like windows media and apple fairplay were. (ps - if you have the right software, you can decrypt the mpeg streams from firewire out of a cable box or satellite receiver, or directly from the hard drive itself on any dvr.)
personally, i think this technology is a good idea, this just seems like a very poor execution of it. if you had drive controllers instead of drive logicboards that did the encryption instead, the system would work much better (especially in the case of mulitple drives in a RAID configuration or having to clean malware out of an infected drive).
btw, hibernate in windows xp kills the computer completely when you turn it off in that fashion, as it does in vista (in my expiriences, at least). if the drive totally loses power, does that mean the drive will or will not ask for the password from hibernate? the way i read the article, it looked as if the drive lost power (ei the drive's completely off because the power supply is, and not asleep because the power supply is still on), it would ask for the password again. - Posted by: nix_hed Posted on: 11/02/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
