I Share the Concerns
There's no way to avoid worrying about the privacy issues. Too much bad stuff has turned up on computers since 9/11 for the Feds to ignore the issue. On the other hand, we, as law-abiding citizens, must be ever mindful to protect our privacy rights.

Other than execution speed for this encryption algorithm being in firmware in the drive interfact circuitry, I fail to see the advantage of this scheme to the "consumer", as compared to, for example, PGP's Whole Disk Encryption product. [No, I do not work for them or own the stock...]

There would appear to be much for flexibility, including the ability to encrypt to multiple private keys simultaneously, one of which you might store in a Swiss bank vault. And so on.
