You make a big assumption that Seagate is "honest"
But there's no way you can verify the absence of a backdoor, master key, or key recovery function on the Seagate chip. If it's done at government direction, they can't tell you, because the Patriot Act gives the feds the authority to classify even the existence of the backdoor.

I did a security project for a company in South Korea in 2003. For their encryption technology, they hired two specialists away from a well-known security company, put together a team, wrote their own software, and then had it secretly reviewed by our team, all to avoid intentional holes in the encryption engine and backdoors from, in their words, "foreign agents".
