Encryption method ...
Don, it appears that the data IS encrypted as it is written to the drive. That would mean that the data on the drive itself IS encrypted. That encryption is secure to the point that even Seagate technicians are unable to defeat it without the password. That certainly seems to indicate it to be fairly safe. The main problem with this, as the article points out is, of course, the human factor. As in "will the employee write the password in a convenient place for the potential theives to find it?" or as the article alludes to "will the employee simply leave their computer on all night so the potential thief can simply copy the data off to unencrypted media?" As always the human factor is what will doom this technology (and every other attempt at foolproof security).
