I'd guess logging out of the current user wouldnt affect the hardware as all users of the machine will need and have access to the whole drive, Seagate's firmware most likely ignores whether its a file, partition or raw I/O its transparently encrypting - it'd have to for backward compatibility with the host.

Although dynamically allocating encryption keys per user would be nice, I dont think it'll happen mostly because of the implications of one user forgetting their password on a multi-user drive...

Ouch.
