Theories, like opinions, vary.
While what you say is legally correct when narrowly confined, there is sufficient cause to argue that MS has changed the spirit, of not the actual terms of their EULA contract. For years people have purchased and installed their MS operating system with the understanding that MS would provide basic fixes and updates for their never perfect software, without question. Now, years later, MS has changed the rules. They will only provide the support they've provided in the past, and under which assumption you purchased and installed their software, IF, and only WHEN, you've allowed them to install additional software on YOUR system - software capable of disabling specific functionality and damaging the user experience through repeated warnings and pop-ups. Software that, like all other software offerings, is not perfect, and is therefore subject to improper findings, false positives, etc. Software that, if it does malfunction, causes you the untold minutes/hours of grief and annoyance necessary to PROVE that you do, indeed, have and hold a proper copy of their software, and the corresponding license(s).
