Once again, Apple to the rescue!!
and I bring up Apple in a good way this time because I'm going to use yet another great argument from the ZDNet Apple camp.

Microsoft actively encouraged piracy in the early days. Much like a drug dealer, they want to users to get "hooked". Once "hooked" they can raise the price, to cover any "losses". Funny part is, each copy of xp sold retail is sold at a margin of 700%. Even the OEM licenses are sold at 200%+ their value. So any claim of losses due to piracy should be more than covered.

So just like Apple, who has very smart and profitable business practices, it sounds like you should be admiring Microsoft for having even smarter and even more profitable business practices! And remember, you can't even bring up illegal monopolistic practices because those had to do with WMP, IE, and servers. The desktop marketshare was a legally gained and maintained "monopoly". Very smart MS, very smart.

Look at vista prices, for a point upgrade they are very high.

Yikes, if you think $99 for a point upgrade is expensive, what could you possibly think of Apple charging $129 for a point upgrade? And if you want the best Media Center software out there, it will cost you a $30 premium over OSX's media crippled point upgrade cost which is more than reasonable considering what you are getting.

But we can't just ignore the fact that relatively few people will buy off-the-shelf upgrades and most will buy PCs with Vista pre-installed. None of us have any concrete idea how much of a Mac's price actually pays for OSX or how much of a PC's price actually pays for an OEM license of Vista but consumers will always have the option of paying less for a Vista computer then they will be able to for a Mac. All in all, consumers will pay less for Vista than for OSX so no, I don't think Vista's monopoly prices are very high compared to the competition.
