An exploit in FF can cause just as much damage as one in IE
As PeterWeter commented, Internet Explorer is lives in the "user application space" (as you called it) just the same as Firefox does.

If there's a bug in IE that lets you run arbitrary code, it's equally as bad as a bug in Firefox that lets you run arbitrary code. Privileges are based on the user account running the process, not on whether the process or its DLLs are shipped as part of Windows or not.

Privilege escalation is a separate issue and would represent a hole in Windows itself, most likely the kernel.
