To expand on what I said...

Yes, I do in fact agree that IE being "part" of the OS exposes you to more risk.

But I was trying to bring over the point that, if you find a flaw in a component of IE that is used by both the OS and the browser, that you are still at that point only being able to take advantage if the process running as the browser, not the process that the OS runs to render, say, the help files for instance. The isolation comes from running different processes (even if they use the same DLLs), not from the fact that some DLLs might be shared. It does make it easier to find common flaws, but you still need to find a way to "get into" the other process.

And once again, I am not saying that the rendering functionality being shared by the OS and the browser is a good thing, it surely does allow an easier way to find flaws that could affect the OS, but that at the same time it is not a direct connection between the OS and the running browser.
