Follow the money...
Apple is not really looking at
the iTunes music store as being a huge profit center, from what I
have read. They wanted to offer an all-in-one soup-to-nuts
process for purchasing music legally online and getting it onto
the playback device, while at the same time guaranteeing that
artists and their companies are not getting ripped off by this
technology. Ultimately they want to see iPods, and this added
integration with an online music store is another value-added
component of the ecosystem.

Huh? I am an Apple user. I have spent a lot of money on their
products where they are clearly superior (MacBook Pro and
iMac), but they lost the plot here completely. Steve has turned
into Bill's evil little brother and lost a lot of street credibility (at
least with me).
iPods and iTunes music store is a HUGE revenue and profit
stream for Apple. They are saving their bacon with it. Just look
at the financial press. Any financial analyst will confirm this. So
yes they are interested in more than helping those poor third
world artists from California and Britain and where ever. They
are concerned with making a buck. That is why Apple is a
corporation and not a charity.
