I must be missing something . . .
First of all, in spite of Apple's DRM, I have found it fairly easy to convert M4p files to something different---in my case, MP3s.

Easy. Burn the "AAC" (aka M4p) files to a CD (Now AIFFs) and then "Import" into iTunes.

Ta daaaaa.

I've purchased less than a $100 worth of iTunes, but, for me, the DRM is moot.

I play thousands of MP3s on my iPod. Most were *not* from iTunes. Most are from CDs (again, "imported"). Others are from eMusic.

YES. eMusic. Unadulterated. Unconverted. I have MP3s from streamed PBS/NPR programs. Play flawlessly. I have MP3s from other music sources also. So much for a "closed" system.

Again, am I missing something? I read the article expecting something ground-breaking and earth-shaking. Hardly anything of the sort.

It was made to sound like there is some "great wall" of China around iTunes Music Service and iPod music players---thus making it a act on par with sending a man to the moon to get NON-iTMS music to play on iPods.

Hardly the case. And, as I already mentioned, it's not very difficult for a person with no knowledge of computer coding and hacking to convert AAC's (Apples Fairplay DRM files) to MP3's
