Record Industry and Apple and DRM
I have mixed feelings about this. Apple is not really looking at
the iTunes music store as being a huge profit center, from what I
have read. They wanted to offer an all-in-one soup-to-nuts
process for purchasing music legally online and getting it onto
the playback device, while at the same time guaranteeing that
artists and their companies are not getting ripped off by this
technology. Ultimately they want to see iPods, and this added
integration with an online music store is another value-added
component of the ecosystem.

The only way they could get record companies to agree with this
scheme and their fixed pricing was to come up with what are
fairly lenient playback and usage parameters on the purchased
music, and provide at least some hand-waving attempt to put a
bit of protection on the musical property. Apple was pretty
ballsy in actually getting this deal made.

I don't think that people choose an iPod over a Creative or the
soon to be released Zune BECAUSE of the music store. I also
think that various artist's music is available on multiple
download outlets, not just iTunes. The situation of moving a
music library from iTunes DRMed songs to be played on another
player IS a valid question, BUT I think it is just like the situation
of moving from vinyl to cassette tape to CD. During these
transitions to different playback platforms, there was not some
great outcry for record companies to come up with a way that
your old vinyl could play on a new CD device.

Anyway, I would imagine that Apple's agreements with the
record company also had some stipulation regarding just WHERE
the tuneage could be played back, ie to what devices...
