You do have a good point.
Making software easy to use does create vulnerabilities. People do want the software to do all the work for them, and those convenience features can be hijacked by the bad guys.

So, Microsoft has 835 million copies out there and 4 million of them are infected. Perhaps part of the reason the malware isn't easy to eliminate is that infected machines are hidden among so many uninfected.

To me, it's discouraging to recognize that the malware writers have largely given up on finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities because exploiting human vulnerabilities is a lot easier.

There is no software solution to malware. So I have to agree with your final statements that Microsoft could solve the problem.
