It detects forgeries
The purpose of SenderID (and its nearly-identical cousin, SPF) is to make it more difficult to spoof the sender. Without it, it's pretty easy to pretend to be somebody you're not in the email system, and senderID's job is to make that difficult.

SenderID does not actually block spam, it makes it easier to identify. The server uses SenderID to detect obvious forgeries, then it's up to whatever programs are running on the server to perform any anti-spam measures (including blocking) neccessary.

And it does work. I used to get a lot of emails from senders that were obviously forged. Ever since I switched my email to a host that uses SPF, the forged emails no longer appear, and instead of dozens (or more) of spams each day, I only get a spam once every few days.

So, yeah, I think it works.
