Kernel access sets a dangerous precendent
It is understandable that security companies would gripe about a perceived threat to their revenue stream. However, giving them access to the kernel is threat to users. Anything a security company can do, a hacker can do. Once that door is opened, ANYONE can go through it, if they try hard enough. Their cries about "ensuring security" will, in the end, result in less security, not more.

These third party security products may have some benefits, but they are not without their own set of issues. Symantec and McAfee keep raising their prices, and adding new "features" that increase the overhead on the system. A reason study of high-overhead system impacts found that the biggest drag on system performance was Norton AntiVirus.

Before people jump on Microsoft and side with these vendors, they should consider that they are not unvarnished goodness and light either.
