Until the hacker's software knows what OS the site is using....
then it can modify its attack. The cracking kits are written looking for Windows boxes. When it finds an open one it will work its way in.
What is considered an Intrusion? Just doing a port scan shouldn't count as an Intrusion Detection. Doing a port scan can give you maybe an inkling of what the OS is just by which ports are open. Something like attempting an RPC call or an SMB message requesting a response would definitively id a Windows box.
