They'd work fine if the kernal is truly inaccessable. The AV software than can set right next to that barrier and intercept anything before it can do damage.

Now if the kernel gets compromised the virus would have free reign as the AV software would be completely clueless of what is happening in the kernal.

A simplified view but I think it get the point accross.

The AV software would be as strong as Microsoft's ability to locke the kernel down is.

The real issue here is this combined with the other security. Does that make AV software obsolete. I hope so becuase AV software is resource intensive. The AV guys aren't going to like it but maybe the writing is on the wall that thier business model is no longer a money maker.
