That's a big assumption
Hacker might be able to get to the kernel, it's possible but it's more possible if you allow AV software in the kernel too.

I think you're right about this having little to do with security. It has a lot more to with Windows getting secure enough to not need anti-virus software any longer. I don't think this act by Microsoft is the soluition to virus issues but it is a step in the right direction and the AV companies don't want Microsoft making thier product obsolete.

I think the AV companies should figure a way to work with the locked down Kernel. Maybe they need to think outside the box to make product that people will pay monthly for like they currently do.
