Oracle Maintenance Agreement
Today an Oracle maintenance agreement was renewed. For about $1,000 per month you not only get updates like in the article but - in effect - you have outsourced your DBA. Its kind of like your airplane flight club however. Drop out for a year and you have to pay a lot more to get back in.

Microsoft does deserve credit for this. If it were not for SQL Server Enterprise Manager, Oracle would not have come up with something similar and Oracle DBAs would still be required at every Oracle shop, even the small ones where that would be cost prohibative.

Competition works. Now with Microsoft providing tools that allow excel spread sheet access to Oracle databases there is less reason to purcase Oracle add ins and/or Oracle 10, if you already have SQL Server 2005. Its a battle all right but the battle is not in my shop. It is where it belongs - between vendors with products that get better and better owing to that.

a happy camper when it comes to proprietary DBMS products.
