Given the chance of unauthorised control of my PC by a successful hacker to total control over my PC being ceded to ANYONE, I have no problem choosing.

Restrictive hardware should never, ever be accepted, regardless of the risk from "anyone" ...including Al-Qaeda etc.

Once "the public" allow themselves to get locked-out of free use of the technology, they will never get back in.
The degree of surveillance and data analysis that modern IT allows means that an opportunity to revert will never arise.

Those who have The Power will inevitably abuse it - that is undeniable.
When they do, how exactly are you (the citizens) going to fight back?
