I'm still deleting Norton as fast as I can....
How Symantec is still in business I do not know.

eg. Yesterday somebody called me - their laptop was running incredibly slow and "could I add more memory to speed it up?"

When I got there it turned out to be an old Win98-era Celeron laptop with Windows XP and Norton installed on it. It took ten minutes from Windows destop appearing until the hard disk finally stopped thrashing and you could start doing things.

Well, the first step is easy - uninstall Norton. That got the boot time down to about three minutes.

Next step - look in the "..\Windows\Run" registry key and see what's loading at startup. I found five well-known viruses in there.

Uhuh. Norton is doing its job with the usual efficiency. I rebooted the machine in safe mode and deleted the registry keys/.exe files by hand.

Reboot again. It now takes under a minute to boot - not bad for such an old machine. Norton was making this machine take ten times longer to boot up and wasn't really stopping any viruses.

I see this exact same story repeated day after day after day. How Symantec stays in business is a mystery to me - there are better alternatives out there for half the money but Norton seems to have the mindshare.
