I'm not sure I'd go that far
There were a lot of factors in the tech decline, most notably being overbought to the point of insanity, but you still make some valid points.

If you and I avoid activated products it makes you wonder how many other people will at least take time to look around for a competing product?

Which raises a good question: How much of the buying market do we represent? Are people like us the standard or just fringe hold-outs who don't really make all that much impact on the market? Problem is that it's darn hard to get good data. All things being equal, I'll pick the non-activated product every time.

You'll also notice that commercial versions frequently lack activation. If our tech guys had to activate on every reinstall you'd see software sailing out the window into the dumpster. We've had a couple enterprise products with activation and we've ended up replacing them for that very reason.
