I agree with Joe
I've so far been able to opt out of product activation, including skipping XPee. But it's getting harder. I keep getting pushed into a smaller pool of products.

It's not the OS activation that's such a problem, but imagine if you have to completely rebuild your machine and then have to re-activate all your software, usually requiring a phone call. The more companies jumping on the product activation bandwagon, the longer it's going to take.

This is the kind of bs driving the popularity of open source software. Amazing how many times companies shoot themselves in the foot for something that seems like a good idea, but can have unforseen long-term concequences.

Things always look different in the board room. I've worked in that atmosphere. You work, eat, exercise and sometimes sleep with a fairly close-knit group of people. Ideas sound good because you're all under the same pressure and there are legions of underlings kissing your a**, objectivity can become warped. Then toss in an analyst conference all here and there, they like hearing specific plans for increasing revenue year over year. So reality and long-term vision is sometimes a casualty of the process.

On a more basic level, remember how M$ claimed piracy was costing them billions of dollars? Well, they've had product activation for over a year now, where are the big increases in earnings? If software piracy was costing so much and driving up the cost of software for the honest users, where are the discounts for putting up with product activation? You're paying the cost in time, what are you getting back for it? Nothing, that's what. Zip, zero, nada. They're saddling you with the burden of proof and not giving you d***. Well, you are getting that, just facing the other way.
