I have all of the above, and you have got to be kidding. Gimp works but is anything but friendly to use. And OO works as long as you are a basic user who only uses basic functions. Ask a sales manager who regularly makes pivot charts for example.

Neither of these alternatives is "more effective" and I dont think anyone else would claim they are. They can be "adequate" for a specific purpose, and are certainly a lot cheaper (nothing is free), but for any power user your claim is ridiculous.

And to tie this to the article, any of these applications is potentially open to exploit code that abuses its functionality. Its debateable whether such an exploit is made easier or harder due to the source code being available, but the impact of such an exploit, and its infection rate (and therefore the kudos for writing it) is much reduced in low-adoption products, so there is less motivation to attack them.
