Upgrading for full benefit
The users of W95/98 are a large enough number that MS had to cancel their plans to cancel support. That should tell you something about the usefulness of some upgrades. You will always have users that are quite happy with what they have and will not upgrade for the sake of one or two features.

Your average home user did not buy his/her PC for security. They bought the darned thing to write letters and send pictures to Grandma, play some games and surf the 'Net. Those types of users never bother with the patches and updates (MS or virus protection) after the initial setup. Forcing that kind of "fix" on those types of users is almost an exercise in futility.

Meanwhile, I am curious as to how much will actually be controllable. I also am sceptical that this kind of patch will perform the wonders as promised without some phoning home and snoopware to go with it. Any software that promises you complete (or nearly so) security usually means secure from everyone else but the maker...
