You're missing it...
"And as far as their firewalls etc go... I think everyone that has read their reviews online should know that the freeware versions of their competitors are superior products. Now they're whining because every consumer's dreams are coming true - no more need to purchase separate add-ons to keep a PC secure."

Two main points you make:
1) Freeware firewalls are superiour to McAfee, Symantec, etc.
2) No need to purchase add-ons to be secure.

What you're missing is that when Vista tightens things up, the 3rd party freeware that's currently better than the add-on pay-ware will be affected along with the pay-ware. IOW, your free ZoneAlarm firewall may no longer function either. So your thing about not needing add-ons...is seriously flawed. We end up with a situation where all the 3rd party products are crippled, and the included one is insufficient. Now, there is no good option.

Right now, it may be extra hassle to do, but I can put ZoneAlarm on my PC and know that its a better firewall than the Windows SP2 one (which only blocks incoming traffic; ZA alerts you to outgoing attempts also and prompts for permission on those...a big omission by MS, IMNSHO). I'd rather retain that ability for the 3rd party to make quality security products, and that's precisely what they are complaining about.
