You are missing the fact that telcos use VoIP themselves
VOIP service isn't up to snuff with traditional phone service. It's a good alternative for low-cost phone access, but it's only as reliable as the internet -- which is NOT as reliable as actual phone lines.

Don't confuse VoIP with internet. VoIP is simply placing voice data over IP networks rather thasn over traditional telco TDM networks. You would probaly be surprised to know that almost 10% of the existing telco phone minutes already travel over VoIP networks. Not over the internet, but over IP networks engineered to carry the VoIP calls at the same or higher quality at a lower cost than the traditional network. The reason the FCC is saying ands off is they realize that in less than 10 years the entire telco infrastructure will be VoIP - the cost advantages to the RBOC are huge and every RBOC is already delivering VoIP service and starting the migration to a pure VoIP network.

In response to your idea that they should simply get rid of all the charges for regular phone line providers -- THAT is NOT what will make regular phone line providers like SBC "competitive" with VOIP providers like Vonage. SBC's big problem is itself. Little Vonage provides a healthy, low-cost alternative and THAT is what will make SBC competitive again in the marketplace.

I think we agree. SBC can not ignore a technology which saves them money and lowers the operational costs of delivering existing service. Since VoIP also positions the telco for new services and outsourced IP network revenue you can expect them to be 90% VoIP or out of business.
