So I just downloaded the ZERT patch and look at the source code.
All the ZERT patch does, is set the "killbits" for the WebViewFolderIcon controls and for the relevant DirectAnimation control. Microsoft offers the killbits in the "workaround" section of their advisories, so the patches are hardly anything worth praising.

In fact, since the ZERT patch is just killbits, it does not fix the underlying vulnerability. Meaning, you could still be attached via other vectors, such as a Word document with the control in it.
