i don't think I'll take MS' 'update tuesday' crap much more...

I'm not a linux zealot or a mac junkie; I do indeed use Windows XP. I don't think Gates is evil, though I do disagree with many of his decisions, like this 'update tuesday' garbage they're starting to pull. Routine maintenance and optimization patches, sure - if you wanna make a designated day for that, then fine. I think basically every Windows user has either set their computer to auto update or just checks every so often for patches manually; I don't wake up on 'update tuesday' and think "Hey, I should check for windows updates!" It's just something I do whenever I think of it.

Security is a different matter. If it threatens the security of the internet or end users, those should be rolled out of Redmont as soon as they're written. Why keep the patch to yourself when the vulnerability is out there for the sake of the calendar? I mean, I remember several months ago there was a WMF flaw and some guy wrote a homebrewed patch for it that really worked. check out the Alexa graph for http://hexblog.com. his traffic went through the roof when he had a patch that Microsoft was witholding. Even after that, I'd be more inclined to buy this 'update tuesday' line if the WMA DRM patch got put in the queue with the rest of the 'update tuesday' stuff. When it came to their precious DRM scheme, they had the patch coded, compiled, and out the door in 72 hours. I'm sorry, I usually cut Redmond alot of slack, but I think I'm gonna have to start reconsidering that...
