I have a theory about Microsoft and backwards compat...
if Microsoft finally drops legacy support for apps, forcing a re-write to the new system, this would actually be bad for other reasons than customer investments.

It would destroy the barrier for vendors to write for Linux as well. Think about it. If Windows apps would have to be re-written to run on a new more secure system then how hard would it be really, to make ports to Linux. Especially since vendors would have to go back to the old way of coding applications.

That means the apps link to libs needed / provided by standard install but install in their own folders and do not require deep integration into a system,

One reason Microsoft won't drop backwards compatibility is because the one true barrier left to Linux is applications, would be removed.

Just a theory but again very plausible. Now for app vendors, since sales are pretty much leveling out (saturation people) what better way to re-vitalize the revenue stream than to change the system? Of course this is a double edged claymore but... devil
