I wish that MS would use a stable and secure kernel
for their system. Dropping backward compatibility is not going to happen:

1) large account customers have invested millions in s/w that runs only on that particular platform. They simply demand it and any vendor (including) MS has to oblige. This happens everywhere (UNIX, OpenVMS, etc.)

2) If MS changes its kernel ALL existing applications will have to pretty much be rewritten due to intimate dependencies with low level APIs and specific behavior of the windows kernel. This is simply an mission impossible.

The issue at hand is that MS invested little time designing platform and apps in a way that are amenable to future growth. This beast is simply now biting them in their rear and it will until they employ solid design and developemtn principles. Given the pressure they are under to secure up their older OSs and their newer offerings (Vista, Longhorn, etc.) I doubt that they can pull this task off. They need a miracle or a time machine to go back 20 years and NOT make the decisions they did.
