Well I do have an answer, and it's only a theory as to why...
to answer your question:

"... why would I bother with Linux or MAC?"

One possible theory, and I have no proof this is happening, nor am I saying it is BUT it is a possibility that it could.

The hacker, or in this case cracker, could be on Microsofts payroll to destroy as many Linux machines as possible, the intent it to show that Linux is not viable thereby killing any chance of Linux becoming a major threat. This is a very real possibility that could happen. The same is true of Macintosh.

If a company is willing to crush competitors any way possible, then this would not be outside the realm of probability. Would Microsoft actually stoop to such a tactic? Dunno, they have done some pretty underhanded stuff over the years. Gates is gone now so who knows.

The problem is people always think in terms of criminals hacking machines. What they fail to realize is there is all sorts of corporate espionage and other underhanded tricks being played in order to maintain the "upper hand" in an area of competition. Now that Linux is moving into the desktop realm around the world... we will have to wait and see.

I am still not buying the numbers game though. There are more Unix / Linux and FreeBSD servers running the web, they make a much better target than Microsoft. Control a server and you have a ton of power. Yet the numbers aren't there to support the larger target theory.

Now people going after Microsoft because they despise the company... very real possibility. With so many small businesses destroyed over the years and the number of partners screwed... who is to say the attacks against Microsoft are of their own doing? They made a very nasty and messy bed by deceipt lies and betrayal over the years. There are a lot of pissed off people that have very long memories of being screwed. Who is to say that IBM or Novell or any other company is not paying someone to attack Windows?

Sure the security experts say it's organized crime that is responsible... but what about the corporate attacks? Kind of like the statistics insurance companies have on the increase of car accidents due to cell phones, J.Q public isn't privvy to these, why? That would be bad for the cell phone companies! So they sit on them and raise our rates. I found out about this tid-bit from a friend that works for a major insurance company.

Thing is the attacks on systems are not just perpetuated by disgruntled kids or criminals... many companies are engaging in a secret digital war as well. Hell, I bet you anything there are at least 5 people that post here in ZDNet that are paid to do so by Microsoft. Why? To counter the truth that we all know. To spread lies and uncertainty upon all that do not toe the Microsoft party line. To disparge the "enemy" of Microsoft and that is any that chose to not use or support or say nothing but nice and wonderful things about Microsoft.

This type of propoganda warfare has gone on for centuries. The only difference is now it's digital.

Just some food for thought. devil
