Reviewing the situation
Microsoft has improved the security aspects of Vista. The company is preparing to sell or has begun selling additional security products.

The company has the problem of assuring an acceptable level of protection without additional purchases. Otherwise, there'd be a valid complaint tht the company creates problems, and then makes additional money for fixing them.
That's going to be an issue when Vista ships.

For context, a check on home pc's in use found that a discouraging number, perhaps 80%, had no more than an expired copy of McAfee products. And that an even more discouraging number were infected.

The problem is real.
Microsoft is following its usual philosophy of preparing to do much for users, who have proven unwilling or unable to meet security concerns for themselves.

Microsoft is following another part of the company's standard procedure, making capabilities available to third party software outfits to allow them to work well.

The concern is that Microsoft will follow still another part of their standard operating procedure, which is foreclosing other companies which compete with Microsoft's products by limiting access to the products or their effectiveness.

That's a legitimate concern, but it hasn't happened yet.

It's unfortunate that companies are preparing to use government regulatory agencies as part of their marketing strategy. But not unreasonable, unless they attempt to circumvent Microsoft's ability to compete fairly.

But that, too, hasn't happened yet.

In sum, then, nothing has happened so far.

No part of this issue should lead to criticism of Microsoft until the product becomes available and is being marketed.

Shows how complicated the software business is now. And why the market belongs to the large and profitable companies.
