Not being a Wintel person, I can't imagine
what Gateway can do to reinvent itself to improve it's "cow"
image. I have a friend who has sworn off Apple's after a System
7.something Powerbook compatibility something. So he bought
a Gateway with Windows 98. He can't turn it off because there is
some problem with the button and you know Win98 doesn't
really "hibernate", so now he's thinking about a Dell because he
needs a new computer and he can't upgrade his win98 system
on his Gateway, but all of his friends complain about their Dells
and HP seems to businessy and none of the other names really
stand out and on and on and on. This guy just uses computers,
he doesn't really understand them.

So if Gateway, HP and Dell can't make him feel comfortable and
his Apple System 7. something decision (made YEARS ago)
seems permanent despite his best friends and girlfriend all
using Macs, how is he, as an average computer user, supposed
to get satsifaction ?

To me, this is Gateway's problem. If they had been as clever as
Apple in retailing and put a specialty retailing person like the
CEO of The Gap on their board to guide them, they might have
done better.

But they didn't. I see no future for Gateway. Sell the assets, turn
out the lights and go home. Why die a slow death and leave the
shareholders with nothing.
