It's really simple
All computer customers want are quality products and quality support at a fair price. If you can provide those things better than your competitors, you'll win market share.

The problem is that Gateway's products have always struggled with quality (too many DOA computers, mostly because they can't seem to plug tab A into slot B correctly), their support is slipping (outsourcing that to workers who struggle with the language will do that to you, and hiring anybody off the street to sell computers in their stores hardly improves their image), and they've almost always been more expensive than Dell's.

But rather than concentrate on improving their product, support, and prices, they've been offshooting into ventures like selling TVs and other forms of multimedia. If they get rid of all that crap and go back to the basics, they'll start improving again.
