Congradulations on a well thought out response with no name calling.
I agree that private companies hold many advantages over publicly traded companies. You've probably seen the article about Sun cutting 3300 workers. Publicly held companies by law have to make stockholders their number one priority, not employees. So if laying off half their workforce is what is in the best interest of the stockholders' short- to mid-term interests, that's what they have to do.
