I hear ya!
I have always been a believer that the best techs and the best mechanics are the ones that have learned in the field. Yes school is helpful for answering theoretical questions and establishing a foundation of understanding, but actual on the job performance is where the real education takes place.

My primary MOS in the Navy was Gas Systems Mechanical and Support Technician. I made LM2500 and Allison AG-9130 and MOD-139 SSGTG's rotate. In others words my primary job was to keep the screws turnin' and the lights burnin'. I went to school for this occupation, and it was 40% theory and 60% application in live operational plants. Even the Navy realizes that the best training and education doesn't come from a book but from actual performance. Ask just about any Navy person and they will tell you that the majority of their schools are based on actual performance of your job. They spend a portion of time learning the basics and theories from books or instructors (approx 40%), then they apply those lessons in live trainers performing the job. This is inclusive to casualty control, what to do when it all goes wrong.

Now I am a programmer, and much of what I learned was self taught, and I used the teaching methodologies of the Navy to teach myself. Yes I did go to school, to fill in a few missing pieces and to get that damn piece of paper, so I could get the job. But I have more hours of experience with the building of actual programs and applications before I went to school. That experience is what most impressed my current employer, not my certs.

I could care less if you have a certification a masters or a doctorate in a tech or mechanical engineering field, the question is do you have the experience to back those up? To many times in my career path in the Navy I, a non-college educated individual, have humiliated many a college grad because they thought they were smarter because of their degree. When the reality is, they may understand the theories better, but I know how it works and what makes it work and when it breaks, why and how to fix it, I have what they lack.... experience.
