Certification is crap.
And it is not even the problem. No accountability, that is the problem. If vendors were held responsible for their negligence in producing consumer products, this particular IT woe would go away.

As far as cert's. I've seen very few certified tech's who could even use their knowledge in the real world situations that they have to deal with. My certification is in accounting, CPA. This certification did absolutely nothing to make me a better accountant. Accounting in the "trenches" on a day to day basis is what trully made me a CPA. But for 13 years I have been in the IT industry and am self taught(way before plug and pray). I have yet to see a certified IT tech that can do anything past the small area of his certification. I have been called in to fix many messes created by these certs. Without being able to deal with an entity's complete IT system, most cert. techs only make things worse. 13 years in the IT trenches is worth more than any cert. It is a fact that the very best of the IT techs we have today are self taught individuals. Their certificate came from HKU. Hard Knocks University. Formal education and real world situations very seldom parallel one another. This is why there are internships in almost all professions. The mumbo jumbo from academia is purged during this time and the real knowledge needed to perform outside of academia in the real world is put back in its place.

Accountability for the negligent practices of software developers is the only way to improve the IT mess which is evidenced by headlines. As an accountant, negligent behavior is addressed by financial accountability, as is a doctor's, lawyer's, the auto industry,... everywhere but IT.
