Aggree with you to a point
But!.. and I understand the reality of how things work, the lowest bidder isn't always the best choice. I work for a State agency where that thought process runs rampant and the results are obvious. But as far as being so costly and insufficient?? did you mean inefficient? You can't blame that all on the programmers. Thats roughly like blaming the Y2K problem on programmers becasue they were too lazy to use the whole date. Most of the "new blood" to the IT industry (by new I mean 15 years or less experiance in the biz) don't have any idea what IT costs used to be. When 4 Gb's of storage took 14 drives and cost $750,000.00. Do the math of what each byte of data storage cost. Storing the century just wasn't an option. The "Bean Counters" saw to that. Today, data storage and hardware costs are chump change which is evident by the code that is being produced. I recall an oil/gas spreadsheet that I did for a leasing company on a Tandy TRS-80 Model I with 4K <-- YES that is NOT a typo.. that serviced over a 1000 oil/gas leases. Try that with ANY speadsheet today !

The cost of US programmers, like everything else in the world is set to what the market will pay. Until the advent of the PC and widespread explosion of computer usage, programmers where as unique, skilled and respected as doctors and lawyers. It was a profession that commanded a good salary for a hard to come by skill. The PC has put an end to the hard to come by part, but not the skill.
